Castle Hill
Exhausts into the 8s
Sydney based 'exhaust' and tune shop, Castle Hill Exhausts
recently established an Aussie drag racing record for the
first IRS turbo Commodore into the 8's running an 8.98 at
160mph, making it the current fastest Turbo IRS Commodore in
the land.
What makes the achievement all the more impressive is how
Dale and the CHE crew managed the feat on a relatively tight
budget purchasing and using some near new parts while
sticking with a 'small' 29 x 9" slick tyre.
The car is a 1999 VT powered by a middle-of-the-road 408
cube engine containing a mild (by drag racing standards)
camshaft offering .610" lift and with shift points of around
7000rpm. Induction is via a pair of TO4z turbochargers with
boost managed by a custom 3 Bar VCM Suite tune. Power is
passed through a two-speed Powerglide trans to the factory
style rear end but not for long with Dale admitting it's
time to up the ante and get ever more serious. But we will
leave it to him to tell the world of his plans.
Exciting for VCM Suite is that CHEs VT runs the following
VCM Suite products:
- VCM Suite 3Bar tune.
- BMR billet CV shafts and Stub Axles.
- VCM Suite dual valve spring kit.

Holden Crewman into the
11s
Deon
Visagie in his Holden Crewman hit the track on Whoop Ass
Wednesday at the Perth Motorplex and stormed his way to an
11.28 second quarter mile pass. This is great achievement
and Deon doesn't know of another Crewman that has run these
times.
The ANDRA official informed Deon that the next time he comes
back he needs to have a 5 point harness fitted, a battery
isolator fitted to the outside of the vehicle and a loop
enclosing the prop shaft. Deon also now requires a Super
Street ANDRA license to pilot his Crewman, so it will be a
few weeks 'till he's back at the track.
This is as far as Deon is willing to go with modifications
to the car, seeing as he is close to the 10.99 second
cut-off which would see him require further modifications
like a chrome-molly roll cage which would see and end to the
use of the Crewman's rear seats.
Deon would like to thank Terry & Tim from MCE Motorsports.

N.D.A tests reap rewards
Based in Penrith, Sydney, Nepean District Automotive (NDA)
recently decided to document a range of modifications using
a VY SS sedan as the mule.
Step one was to run the vehicle (factory stock automatic)
over WSID's quarter mile to register a base line from which
to work. It was decided that several passes be undertaken to
ensure the best possible time was achieved, with the fastest
an acceptable 15.194 @ 94.22mph. The following day NDA staff
ran the vehicle on their 'Shootout' equipped Dyno Dynamics
chassis dyno where it showed a low 167 kilowatts at the rear
tyres.
A week later (March 1st, 2007), NDA performed a VCM Suite
Maf tune for an amazing 211 rear wheel kilowatts (an
astounding 44 kilowatt increase!). Enthused by the
improvement, the VY was taken to WSID the following
Wednesday evening (March 7, 2007) where it produced a best
14.67 @ 98.46mph for 4.24mph (6.81kph) and .52 second
improvements in speed and Elapsed Time.

Holden VE SS-V into the 10's
Pushing the performance envelope is standard fare for
Melbournian Gary Pope who, with the assistance of The
Horsepower Factory, has created a couple of cars that
legends are made of.
His latest Commodore, a 2006 model Phantom metallic SS-V,
was purchased intent on daily driving; however this would
only happen once the showroom stock 6-litre had spent time
at HPF. It was delivered straight from the showroom floor
mid way through 2006, and given the timing very few others
had played with the VE, and none that HPF knew of had in
fact tickled one with a turbo.
Significant planning led to HPF not opting for their twin
turbo package, rather they developed a single turbo
(utilising a Garrett GT35/40) combination. It took some
doing, but they achieved the desired result while also
paying attention to valve springs, adding an in-tank Walbro
fuel pump and 60 pound injectors. The only other drive line
mod was a Textralia clutch.
Tuned using VCM Suite; the only software available anywhere
on the globe capable of working with the VE PCM, HPF managed
a credible 380 kilowatts at the treads on pump fuel and at
9PSI boost. Filling the tank with race fuel and winding up
the VCM Suite tune added another 40 kilowatts for an
astounding 563 rear wheel horsepower. Enough for Gary to
steer his luxurious Commodore over Calder's 400 metres of
blacktop in a potent 10.97 seconds at 130 mph.
Now that's impressive, particularly from a manual car.

Twin
Turbo VY SS Ute - Castle Hill Exhausts
There's no better way to promote your wares than to be 'out
there' doing the business. Which is exactly what Dale from
Castle Hill Exhausts had done by putting in a few 'laps at
WSID in his twin turbo VY SS ute.
'Just another twin turbo' huh? Well, not quite. Turns out
Dave decided to shun several off-the-shelf systems in favour
of his own combination, a set-up consisting of twin Garrett
2876r turbos, large PWR intercooler, and revised fuel
system. Logically the turbos mean the 5.7 sucks plenty of
juice once the loud pedal is pressed to the floor, Dave
assisting things with a pair of Bosch pumps and his own
surge tank, Aeromotive reg and 60 pound Siemens injectors.
Engine internals are about as close to stock as they come
with the only deviation a HSV GTS camshaft and Competition
Cams 918 valve springs. Of course the only way to properly
'sort' the massive increase in engine power (thanks to 12
psi boost) is to perform a VCM Suite 2Bar speed density
tune.
Running at WSID on a foul Sydney evening with an ambient
temperature of 40c and a track temp of 56c, Dale achieved a
respectable 11.12 second elapsed time at 126.61 mph (127.13
best) by way of the stock 6-speed topped with a RIP shifter,
Textralia clutch and stock 3.46 rear end.
Running 26 x 8.5" Mickey Thompson slicks, the ute managed a
60' time of 1.688 seconds with Dale commenting that 'the
only thing stopping the car from achieving a 10 was the
crappy driver!". Note that everything was made in-house
including the tuning.

Trackside VCM
tune proves fruitful - 13.9@99.5mph
Generation Motorsport from Penrith recently visited WSID
with a friend who figured he'd try the 1/4 mile in his stock
standard VY Ute, (meaning absolutely no modifications
whatsoever) and went on to post a best 14.601 @ 96.96mph.
Interested in seeing what a quick 'trackside VCM Suite tune
might do, Generation Motorsport's Terry Date plugged into
the car flashing in a basic tune.
With no changes other than the tune, the other wise stock VY
(right down to the original tyres running 38 psi, air box
and air cleaner) posted a significantly improved 13.96 @
99.57mph. That's a 6/10ths improvement in elapsed time along
with 3mph. The MPH indicating the car picked up a quick 17
kilowatts.
Facing facts, an entirely stock engine (intake and exhaust)
will never realise a tune's full potential, hence there is
certainly untapped potential. Add to this the fact that the
tune was a last minute thought and created there and then at
the track, one can only assume that if placed on a dyno the
result would have been much better.

VCM
Suite holds several Drag Racing records!
A number of LS1 powered Commodores made their way out to a
recent Calder based legal off-street drag meeting, with
three of the group establishing Australian 'class' records
For the meeting, VCM Suite Technical Assistant Grant
Thompson added an Over The Radiator induction system to his
black Monaro intent on breaking new performance ground.
The Monaro's engine is 'unopened', runs extractors and
exhaust, 78mm throttle body and 3.7 diff gears and a STOCK
torque converter, and with the OTR intake cut a new 'stock
converter unopened' record of 12.66 seconds at 111.83mph.
A couple of weeks earlier while running a VCM Suite VZ 85mm
upgrade, the car produced a credible 12.83 at just one mph
slower.
Also, at Heathcote Raceway with the VZ MAF the car has
achieved 112.5mph to be just .3 down on the speed achieved
using an OTR. Grant commented that the OTR is a great option
if drag racing is the desired use, however for daily street
use the VZ MAF is perfect.
Australian record Number 2
A diminutive blue Statesman with a custom VCM Suite tune
competed at the same Calder meeting where it achieved the
best ever time for an unopened Stato with a 12.83 @ 109mph.
The car runs full street trim, and achieves a reasonable
60-foot time thanks to a 2800rpm torque converter. Other
mods include a full exhaust and MAF-less intake.
Australian record Number 3
The GM Motorsport VCM Suite tuned red VY SS Manual now has
the outright record for Australia's Fastest unopened, along
with the outright speed record. Running full interior and
mostly street trim, the amazing SS relies on a F.A.S.T inlet
manifold, GM Motorsport throttle body, full exhaust, an OTR
intake, it relies on a RIP shifter for the 6-speed manual
and runs 3.9 diff gears.
90/10 front shocks aid the launch while the twin spark table
equipped 1Bar SD Enhanced VCM Suite tune ensures the engine
delivers the best possible power to 26 x 10" Mickey Thompson
slicks. The time achieved was an astonishing 11.5 @ 119mph!
This very car also achieved The Most Powerful Unopened LS1
at the recent Sydney AME show where it produced 275rwkW.
Other GM Motorsport 'VCM Suite' tuned Commodore records
include:
Highest cam only dyno show output @ 325 rwkw with a black VU
SS Ute.
Mark Hudson's SV8 cam only, run in full street trim and
tuned by Mark of Power Torque engines now holds the record
at 11.503 set on the 24/8/2005. The car's details are as
follows:
Power Torque tuned and built
Comp 232x234
4600 High Stall
4.11's
OTRCAI
Drag radials
Run full weight street trim.....pump gas + Nulon OB
Backed up with a 11.504
And we can't forget the fastest normally aspirated 4-door
sedan record - outright - with a 10.71 @ 128.86 from a stock
stroke 346 cube engine.
VX2855 is another VCM Suite tuned car, the heavyweight
Clubsport with mild cam and head package managed a highly
credible 11.9 @ 114mph with more to come.
